Kendrick Lamar’s new surprise album, GNX, released without notice on November 22, 2024, marks a significant evolution in his artistic journey. This 12-track project, named after the 1980s Buick GNX, is his first release following his departure from Top Dawg Entertainment and Aftermath Entertainment, now under his own label, PGLang, in collaboration with Interscope Records.

Often celebrated for his intricate concept albums, GNX instead sees Kendrick return to a much more straight-forward hip-hop approach of pure bangers with no over-arching concept, but all ripe with Kendrick’s signature thought-provoking lyrics and unmatched flow. Thematically GNX is one of Kendrick’s fiercest and most concise albums to date, clocking in at 44 minutes of densely packed wordplay and narritives that delve into themes of rivalry, loyalty, and personal growth, and also touching on his public feud with Drake.

GNX is a testament to the singular craftmanship of one of the defining hip-hop artists of our time. A masterful conceptualist, now showing that he is in a league of his own when it comes to straight up songwriting chops where each track is a marvel to behold in its own right.
